Liz Tigelaar: The Evolution of Life Unexpected

LA TV examiner spoke with Liz Tigelaar, the creator of the hit show, Life Unexpected:
Tigelaar points to last week’s episode (“Crisis Unaverted“) when reaching for an example of this. “I remember first pitching it, and it was a story about Tash (K. Solo), and Lux (Britt Robertson) and her mom,” she recalls. “And we got a note that it was too small that sent us off in a completely different direction– about Lux and Bug (Ravi Gavron) and Bug’s past and Tash’s mom needing money and Lux trying to get it from Cate but not being able to. So Lux and Bug did something involving drugs or something shady and ends up getting them all in trouble. We thought we were answering the note of ‘make it feel bigger; make higher stakes.’ But then the network kind of freaked out about ‘what show is this?’ We’re not some dark show, going into a drug den– though I would love that! So what ended up happening was we came back around to doing a much smaller, simpler story, kind of like what we pitched in the first place, of Lux desperate for her friend to have what she has.”
