Katherine Heigl loves Life Unexpected!
May 14th
“I just started watching Life Unexpected. It’s an unbelievable show on the CW. I think it’s an amazing story. I’d worked with the show’s star Shiri Appleby years ago on Roswell and she’s spectacular on it. I love the story. It’s about parents who give a daughter up for adoption and she comes into their lives 16 years later. I liked that perspective on it. I watch it and I think about what it cost my adopted daughter Naleigh’s parents to let her go and that it was the best thing they could do for her, but how hard that must be emotionally. I sit and watch this show every week from the birth mother’s perspective, and it’s amazingly well done.” -Katherine Heigl
We hope the show will be announce as renewed during the CW Upfronts on May 20th. Stayed tuned for details!
Reviews for “Father Unfigured”
Apr 5th
Los Angeles Times says:
Readers, what did you think of the show’s first family trip? Creator Liz Tigelaar told me it’s a new feel for the show and one they’re moving toward. I quite liked seeing the family unit bonding over corn dogs and old music, although I did miss Ryan. What did you think of Cate’s dad, who I think made Baze look like Parent of the Year. For all his faults, Baze wants to know his daughter and he’s trying. And what do you think Baze will do about his feelings during next week’s big wedding episode? — Vlada Gelman (Follow my TV musings on Twitter: @stayingin)

The TV Chick says:
The entire show (not just this episode) is about family, but “Father Unfigured” addressed each character’s issues so perfectly. I love that Baze has been stepping up all season and continues to be there for Cate and Lux. If he had left Tahoe like he said he would, it wouldn’t have stayed true to his character and what his character has developed into. I could actually personally relate to Cate’s storyline a bit which made it that much better to watch. Tigelaar and the writers have done such an outstanding job grounding the show. No one on it is perfect but they are all so wonderful in their own ways. I still can’t decide whose team I am on. I think Baze and Cate inevitably are going to get together or realize that they need to be together, at least to find out if it could work. I feel bad for Ryan in this whole mess, since he’s a great guy, but in order for their relationship to move forward, both Cate and Baze have to admit to each other that they love each other. That’s right, I said love. I think their feelings go much deeper than just the desire to have some sort of fling. Lux, Cate, and Baze all want to be a family, and a part of me really wants that to happen. I cannot wait to see what the finale episode brings. I also can’t wait to see season two. Yeah, I’m just going to say it now, because I adore the show and I want to see more of it.

Random thoughts:
- Cate’s mother is played by Cynthia Stevenson, who is not quite old enough to realistically play Shiri Appleby’s mother. They’re 16 years apart so yes, it is biologically feasible, but not likely.
- The road trip montage was a bit cliche but oh so fun. Not so fun? The BLATANT State Farm product placement. Holy awkward, Batman!
- What is up with Baze’s Starship obsession? No one likes “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” that much. Not even my mom, and she loves it like nobody’s business.
- What do you guys think of Baze’s decision to embrace his feelings for Cate? Do you want him to stop Cate and Ryan’s wedding? Or should he just leave it alone?
Favorite quotes:
“Is it weird to want to smell someone?” - Baze
“Did you just sniff me?” – Cate

Reviews for Episode 11 “Storm Weathered”
Mar 30th
I loved Ryan’s scenes in this episode. I thought it was great having Ryan and Lux get stuck together because we were able to hear more about Lux’s past. Ryan offered some great advice to her and I like that he is sort of in a more fatherly role without attempting to take Baze’s place. This episode wasn’t as intense as last week’s tear jerker, but I still really enjoyed it. I have loved every episode of this season, but this one served more of a purpose to set up further storylines as opposed to directly moving the plot along. I don’t want to take anything away from it, because I really liked everyone getting stuck in the rain together. I think my favorite part of this episode was the fact that Baze and Cate are now both thinking about each other, and their feelings. There is a lot of resentment built up for Cate I am sure but both Baze and Cate love each other in a real way. They are now ultimately connected because of Lux, and that connection isn’t going to go away. If they are going to just co-exist as platonic parents (how’s that for alliteration), they need to explore those feelings. I suppose I have kind of said this all along. I don’t want Ryan to go away but something has to happen where Cate and Baze actually talk about or admit their feelings for each other. I am sad that there are only 2 episodes left in the season. However, I am even more sad that the CW hasn’t picked it up yet.
Anyway, despite seeing Lux’s hard background, it was still a a great episode, and it was one that seemed much less wrought with pain than others. I must say, though, poor Abby. I’m actually starting to like her more, now that she’s not so one-dimensional. You had to feel bad for her because you get the impression that Cate has always overshadowed her, but it’s not like Cate had it that great either (especially when you consider how she described how alone she was when she was pregnant). But overall, I’m glad that Abby’s getting more of a role.
Get out your Snuggies and flashlights because there’s a storm in Portland. After proposing to Ryan (Kerr Smith) for the second time, Cate (Shiri Appleby) suggests eloping to avoid dealing with their families. Kerr Smith told me that Ryan’s family is just as crazy as Cate’s and our first glimpse of them, albeit through a one-sided telephone conservation, did not disappoint. There’s a pervy uncle and a family feud involving turducken, which if you’re not familiar with it is a turkey stuffed with duck, which is stuffed with chicken. I feel disgustingly full just thinking about it. But as soon as Cate suggested eloping that night, I knew they weren’t going to go through with it. Whenever the word is uttered on TV, the couple never keeps their promise.
LA Times: Reviews “Family Therapized”
Mar 23rd
Lux (Brittany Robertson), Cate (Shiri Appleby) and Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) finally got all their issues out into the open in this heart-wrenching and sweet hour. Things started off cute and playful with Cate and Ryan (Kerr Smith) talking her cold feet and his hot legs while they’re sleeping. The sleeping theme continued with a shot of Lux sleeping with Bug (Rafi Gavron). After last week’s reveal that Lux isn’t a virgin, I was surprised to see that Baze wasn’t keeping better whereabouts on her, but apparently, he’s “too busy sleeping with Cate’s sister to notice anything.”
Currently, Lux is giving Baze the “a cold whole body” because she’s angry with him, but don’t worry. That’s all going to change at least five times within the hour. Lux flip-flops between parents like she does between boys. She sneaks out late at night to help Bug with his new job handing out fliers at a nightclub. Seriously, how many people does it take to do that? She gets caught breaking curfew, leading her social worker to move up Cate and Baze’s family evaluation. They now have less than a week to make things right and present a united front. As much as Lux is angry with Cate and Baze, she doesn’t want to get sent back to foster care either. @thetvchick writes:
In any case, I thought this week’s episode was fantastic. I don’t think I would call it my absolute favorite of the season but it really set the groundwork for future Lux/Bug interactions and Baze and Cate moving on with their lives and coming to a new understanding of their relationship. I really hope that the CW doesn’t wait until upfronts to announce the fate of this show. It has such a following, and last night’s episode had some of the best ratings in the history of this season.

Reviews “Bride UnBridled”
Mar 9th
The TV Chick: But back to Lux and Jones’ “date,” that he picks her up at 9 am for. They are driving somewhere quite far and Lux is skeptical. However, they discover that they both have the same taste in music. (At first I thought that Baze told Jones what Lux likes, but it turns out that isn’t true). While Lux and Jones are on their date, Baze finds a text message from Ryan to Lux (she left her phone at home). Ryan is going to buy Lux a car, and Baze is none too pleased about this fact. Finally, Lux and Jones arrive at their destination and Tasha runs out of the house. Lux and Tasha embrace in an incredibly great moment. Jones is obviously a good guy. I am still wondering about Bug and if he will ever come back, but I like that there is another love interest for Lux. Lux and Tasha spend the whole day catching up, and Jones babysits the other foster kids. (Team Abercrombie?) full review here
TV Fanatic: We liked seeing Baze and Ryan sharing a beer together and quasi bonding. Odd, yes, but nice nonetheless. Ryan needs a friend and wouldn’t it be something if he and Baze become bros?
We love this show and can’t see what will be the next development in each of their lives. What did you guys think? Also, anyone else love that the bong lamp came up in conversation again this week? full review here
Ryan: The real question is what the hell is wrong with you.
Baze: I get that you and Cate have issues – I don’t care.
Math: I’m not a stalker – I’m a long time fan.
Cate: I made my bed, and now I have to lie about it – awesome.
Someone has a crush on Math…
Television Without Pity: “Even though Math literally has nothing to do with anything outside of turtle racing — albeit a pretty kick-ass contribution to the show in general.”
Zap2it: Random thoughts:
- Loved Joe Purdy’s “Can’t Get it Right Today” as the opening track. He’s one of my favorite artists. Check him out! (Also: Schuyler Fisk at the end! Good stuff.)
- Were those bands on Jones’ iPod real? If so, I am REALLY old because I haven’t heard of a one of them.
- This was the first time I realized Math’s name is actually Matthew. Did we already know this?
- One of my favorite things about this show is how each adult character has a different yet wonderful relationship with Lux. Baze is the fun dad who is great at making her feel better, Ryan is the “cool” guy she can talk with about cars and boys, and Cate is the mom who uses her own life experiences to dole out advice. They’re building great things here, character-wise.
Favorite quotes:
- “I gotta admit, I was psyched about having Lux stay with us, but she’s so depressing. How long can she cry over a guy with a web on his neck?” - Baze
- “Right. I made my bed, now I have to lie about it.” - Cate
- “Don’t bother trying to fix us, Cate. Just fix yourself.” - Ryan
